We are getting super excited about our week at Camp Davy Crockett next week! Believe it or not, it is still not too late to sign up for camp! See Mr. Rutherford if interested. Here are some details (a printable version is included below)…

We will meet at 12:05 pm on Sunday June 23 in the rear parking lot of State Street United Methodist Church. Below is a list of things to bring. We recommend packing a suitcase or foot locker instead of a backpack. We will stop at McDonalds in Kingsport for lunch (bring money or send a packed lunch).

Summer Camp Sign Ups

Canoe Camping Trip this weekend

We will meet at the church at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday June 8 to travel to Natural Tunnel State Park for an overnight camping trip. Our activities will include canoeing on the Clinch River and a nighttime hike. We will return to the church on Sunday and will call for rides when we return. Cost of the trip is $25, which covers all food, transportation, and camping. Scouts should bring normal overnight camping gear (check our website for a checklist at http://www.troop8bsa.com/forms/Camping-checklist.pdf). Please RSVP for this trip, because the canoe excursion is limited to sixteen participants. For canoeing, scouts need water shoes or old sneakers – flip flops or crocs are not recommended.

Troop Meeting at Steele Creek Park June 4th

JUNE 4th: This will be a regular troop meeting at Steele Creek Park. Scouts can be dropped off directly at the park or a van will be leaving the church at 7:00. Bring bikes, soccer balls, and baseball gloves…whatever you want. This is a free night to celebrate the end of school. We will return to the church at 9:00 for pickup.

June 23-29: Camp Davy Crockett !!

Every scout should attend summer camp at Davy Crockett to work on merit badges and advancement requirements!!

Scouts can get more done toward advancement in one week at camp than in six months at troop meetings. We encourage all our scouts to attend camp.

The ceremony starts at 7:45. Parents and families are encouraged to attend.

Scout Expo/Camping May 4-5

We will meet at 9:00 Saturday morning to head down to the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray, TN for the Sequoyah Council Scout Expo. Our troop will be running the archery range. After the expo ends, we will head over to Warrior’s Path State Park to camp overnight, returning to the church on Sunday. ALL SCOUT EXPO TICKET MONEY AND UNSOLD TICKETS ARE DUE NOW. Please bring them tonight or contact Mr. Rutherford to make arrangements to deliver them this week.

There is a Coleman Outlet camping equipment store, and concession stands at the Expo, and scouts can bring pocket money for those. Cost of camping is $15, which covers supper, breakfast, gas, and camping fee.

Camp Davy Crockett Registration!

It is time to start thinking about troop 8’s week at Camp Davy Crockett, June 23-29. We encourage all our scouts to attend summer camp – there are many fun and exciting classes, and scouts who attend camp can really accomplish some major work on rank advancement and merit badges! The cost is $195 for the week, which is much less than most week-long camps. We also have access to camp scholarships. Anyone who would like to apply for a camp scholarship need only let us know.

Registration for classes begins this week. A listing of the classes is available here [CDC2013]. Scouts can begin looking over this list, and we will be discussing it in our patrol meetings tomorrow night. The BSA requires a current physical for each scout who attends camp. A writeable pdf version of this form is available in the forms section of this website. Please print off this form and take them with you for your son’s next physical.

A note on expo tickets

Selling expo tickets is an easy way to earn a free trip to Camp Davy Crockett. Here’s how:

Any scout who sells 350 tickets can earn a free trip to camp, valued at $195. In addition to the free week at camp, the scout also receives a commission of $105 which is deposited into his troop account. This can be used to pay for any scouting-related expenses, including trips, uniforms, gear, dues, etc. Here’s how I do the math:

$350 ticket sales minus the cost of camp ($195) minus the $105 commission is $50. If you know you’re going to camp and can sell 50 tickets, you end up better off if you go ahead and purchase the rest. The Food City coupon can be used for groceries or gas, and the dollar off pays for the price of the ticket. Scouts can sell to family, neighbors and friends, and they can also sell at Food City stores. To sign up for a time at Food City, get two or four scouts and a parent chaperone and call the council office (423-952-6961) to reserve a time.
