Canoe/Kayak Camping Trip

This weekend, we’ve got a trip that has been much-requested: a canoe/kayak camping trip along the Holston River. Here are the details:
When: meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday September 24.

We will load up gear and boats. Then we will drive out to Mendota and make camp. After camp has been set up, we will travel up the river and embark on our float trip.

We are floating about 5 miles on nearly flat water. The North Fork is shallow and calm. No experience is necessary. All of our scouts will be able to navigate the easy paddle.

We will have several canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and tubes. If you have a canoe or kayak you could bring, please let Mr. Cheers know (and bring it along). Scouts can also bring their own lifejackets, although we will have some there as well.

What to bring? Normal camping gear for a weekend trip. See the checklist at our website, www.troop8bsa.com. Ask a leader if you have questions. The troop will provide tents and all food for the weekend. Don’t forget your own plate/cup/fork/spoon. Cost for this trip is $15 to cover the cost of food.
Scouts will also need footwear for the river. Highly recommended are closed-toe shoes (old tennis shoes are best). Shoes will get wet and very muddy. Sandals are ok for camp but not for the river.
We will return to the church around lunchtime on Sunday.

If you plan to attend, please let us know so we can ensure we’ve brought enough boats.

Thanks to Mr. Cheers and Mr. Baker for making this trip happen!
